Andrey Avinoff was a man who excelled in a wide range of disciplines. It is difficult to decide whether to call him a museum Director, artist, explorer, mystic, professor, iconographer or diplomat. Unpublished biographies written about him include "Rhapsodies of Panorama and Enlightenment" by started by his nephew Nicholas Shoumatoff and another by the reknowned Russian biographer, Boris Brasol.
